Eyes Open, Heart Open: Seeing Those in Need
Have you ever looked away when you saw someone hurting because you didn’t know what to do? This one verse from Proverbs has a bold promise for people who choose to look – and a serious warning for those who choose to look away! This mission explores Proverbs 28:27.
What Does Proverbs 28:27 Mean?
Proverbs 28:27 makes a straight-up promise: give to someone who is poor, and you will not end up without what you need. But the second half is just as important – if you “hide your eyes,” meaning you deliberately ignore someone in need, things don’t go well. God designed us to notice each other, care for each other, and act on what we see. Ignoring need isn’t neutral – it’s a choice with real consequences.
Hero Challenge
This week, keep your eyes open for one person who might be struggling – at school, in your neighborhood, or even in your own home. Don’t look away. Ask a parent how you could help that person, then take one small action to show you see them and care.
Did You Know?
The book of Proverbs contains 31 chapters – one for each day of the month – and it returns to the theme of caring for the poor over and over again. In the ancient world, there were no food banks or government help programs. The community itself was responsible for looking after people in need, and God took that responsibility very seriously.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
If you saw a friend who had no snack at lunch, what could you do to help them?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
Why do you think God made a promise to take care of people who give to others who are poor?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
The verse says hiding your eyes brings a curse. What does it say about a person’s character when they choose to ignore someone in need – and what makes it hard to keep our eyes open?
♥ Mission Prayer
Lord, keep my eyes open to the people around me who are hurting or in need. Give me a heart that wants to help and hands that are ready to act. Amen.
