John 15:2

17 July 2024 · Hero Mission
"God cuts away branches that aren't producing fruit, and trims the ones that are — so they grow even more!" (Paraphrased for younger readers — original: John 15:2 NIV)
John 15:2

Mission Briefing

John 15:2 uses the picture of a grapevine to explain something important about how God grows us. He removes branches that aren’t producing anything useful – and He trims the branches that ARE producing fruit so they can produce even more. Pruning sounds harsh. It looks harsh. If you’ve ever seen a freshly pruned plant, it looks almost hurt. But the gardener isn’t being cruel – they’re being strategic. The pruning is what makes the fruit possible.

Think of a time when something you really wanted was taken away. A friendship that ended. A plan that fell apart. A season that closed before you were ready. It might have felt like loss – and maybe it really was hard. But what if God was pruning? What if He was making room for more fruit than the old branch could ever have held? Pruning hurts. But fruitfulness follows the plants that trust the gardener.

What Does John 15:2 Mean?

If something in your life right now feels like it’s being cut away – don’t panic. Ask God what He’s growing instead. Seasons of pruning are not punishments. They’re invitations to produce more. The branch doesn’t get to understand the full plan – it just has to stay connected to the vine. Stay connected to Jesus. Keep trusting. What comes after the pruning is worth the process. The fruit is coming. Give it time.

Mission Activity

Draw a bare branch on a piece of paper. On the branch, write one thing that was hard or taken away recently. Then, using a green crayon or marker, draw new leaves and fruit growing from that same branch. On each piece of fruit, write something good that COULD grow from this season – something you’re learning, a new strength, a new opportunity. Pray over your drawing: “God, grow something beautiful here.” (Note: the verse above is paraphrased to help younger readers connect with its meaning. The original is John 15:2 NIV.)

♥ Mission Prayer

Dear God, when things are removed from my life that I wanted to keep, help me trust that You're pruning, not punishing. Grow something better in the space that's left. Help me not to give up when the process feels hard. Amen.
