Mission Briefing
Silver, Gold, and Everything
Have you ever seen a shiny coin or a treasure chest in a movie and thought, “I wish that were mine”? Here’s something amazing: all the silver and gold in the entire world already belongs to Someone – and that Someone is God! Understanding this changes everything about how we think about money and stuff. This mission explores Haggai 2:8.
What Does Haggai 2:8 Mean?
Haggai 2:8 comes from a moment when God was encouraging His people to rebuild the Temple. They were discouraged because the new Temple seemed small and unimpressive compared to the grand one Solomon had built. God’s answer? Don’t worry about the treasure – all the silver and gold in the world is already Mine. He was saying He could make the new Temple glorious in His own time and way. The deeper lesson is this: God is never short on resources. He owns all wealth, all treasure, all riches. When we give, serve, or build for His kingdom, we are simply using what is already His – and He is more than able to provide.
Hero Challenge
This week, look at your allowance, birthday money, or anything you own that feels valuable to you. Ask God: “How can I use this as if it belongs to You?” Maybe that’s setting some aside to give, using it to help someone, or simply being grateful instead of wanting more. Practice seeing your resources as tools in God’s hands – not just yours!
Did You Know?
In ancient times, the value of a temple was often measured by how much gold and silver decorated it. Solomon’s Temple was famous throughout the known world for its extravagant beauty and treasure. When the returning exiles built a simpler Temple, it seemed like a step backward. But God was teaching them – and us – that His presence and power are never limited by material wealth. He owns it all anyway!
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
If God owns all the gold and silver in the world, does He need our help to make great things happen? (Hint: He invites us to help because He loves us – not because He needs us!)
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
The people felt discouraged because they didn’t have enough treasure to build a beautiful Temple. How can remembering that God owns everything help us when we feel like we don’t have enough?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
Haggai 2:8 was meant to encourage people who felt their offering wasn’t good enough. How does knowing God owns all wealth change the way you think about giving, generosity, and contentment in your own life?
♥ Mission Prayer
Lord, thank You for reminding me that all treasure belongs to You. Help me to hold money and things loosely, knowing that You own it all and You are always enough. Teach me to use what I have as a faithful steward of Your gifts.
