Mission Briefing
God’s Very First Mission for Humanity
Before there were schools, cities, governments, or jobs – before almost anything else in human history – God gave people their very first mission. And it was bigger than anything you might expect. It was a call to fill the earth, care for it, and be responsible for all living things. That mission hasn’t been cancelled. It still belongs to us! This mission explores Genesis 1:28.
What Does Genesis 1:28 Mean?
Genesis 1:28 is often called the “Cultural Mandate” – God’s original commission to humanity. “Be fruitful and multiply” is about growing families and communities. “Fill the earth and subdue it” is about developing, cultivating, and bringing order to creation. “Have dominion” means responsible leadership – not careless exploitation, but wise and caring governance over living things. This is not a license to abuse creation; it is a calling to reflect God’s own wise and caring rule. We are made in God’s image (verse 27), which means our dominion should look like His – creative, generous, life-giving, and responsible.
Hero Challenge
You have been given dominion – real responsibility – over some part of creation right where you are. This week, take that seriously. Care for a pet, a plant, or your local environment with intentional love. Pick up litter. Learn about one animal or ecosystem. Or simply go outside and give thanks for the world God made and entrusted to you. Being a hero of creation starts with paying attention!
Did You Know?
The Hebrew word for “dominion” (radah) is also used in the Bible to describe how a good king governs – with care, protection, and justice for those in his charge. God’s first instruction to humanity wasn’t about worship rituals or religious rules – it was about taking responsible care of His creation. That shows how much God values the physical world He made and how seriously He takes our role within it.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
God asked people to take care of the animals and the earth. Can you name one animal you want to learn more about this week? How can you be kind to animals and nature?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
“Dominion” means being responsible for something, not just using it however you want. What’s the difference between being a good caretaker of creation and being careless or wasteful with it?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
Genesis 1:28 is sometimes called the “Cultural Mandate.” It means that caring for creation, building communities, and developing the earth is part of God’s original plan for humans – not just going to church or reading your Bible. How does this change the way you think about school, work, art, science, and everyday life? How is all of that connected to your faith?
♥ Mission Prayer
Lord, thank You for the incredible mission You gave humanity from the very beginning. Help me to take my role as a caretaker of Your creation seriously — to be responsible, creative, and caring with the earth and living things You've placed in my world. May my dominion look like Yours: full of love and wisdom.
