Mission Briefing
Words That Make a Difference
Did you know that the words you say can be like seasoning on food – they can make everything taste better, or they can ruin the whole meal? Paul gives us a brilliant recipe for talking to people in a way that really makes a difference! This mission explores Colossians 4:5-6.
What Does Colossians 4:5-6 Mean?
Paul tells us two things: first, be wise in how we act around people who do not share our faith, and second, make sure our words are always kind and interesting – “seasoned with salt.” In ancient times, salt was incredibly valuable. It made food delicious and helped preserve it. Paul is saying our words should be so good that they are worth keeping – words that encourage, heal, teach, and show others the love of God through us.
Hero Challenge
Challenge yourself to be extra intentional with your words this week. Each day, say one genuinely encouraging thing to someone – a classmate, sibling, or neighbor. Make it specific and sincere, not just “you are nice.” Notice how your words affect the people around you and how it makes you feel too.
Did You Know?
In Paul’s day, salt was so valuable that Roman soldiers were sometimes paid with it – that is where the word “salary” comes from! When Paul said to season your speech with salt, his readers immediately understood: make your words valuable. Salt also prevents decay, which is a picture of how encouraging words can stop negativity and bitterness before it spreads.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
Salt makes food taste yummy! Can you think of a kind word that makes someone feel really good when they hear it?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
What is the difference between gracious words and unkind words? How do you feel after hearing each kind?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
Paul says to “know how you ought to answer each person.” Why does this require wisdom? What would it look like to tailor your words thoughtfully depending on who you are talking to?
