Mission Briefing
The One Who Holds Everything Together
Right now, at this very second, every atom in your body, every star in space, every wave in the ocean is being held together by Jesus. Not falling apart. Not spinning out of control. Held. That’s not just science – that’s a Person who loves you and keeps everything in place! This mission explores Colossians 1:16-17.
What Does Colossians 1:16-17 Mean?
Colossians 1:16-17 is one of the most sweeping descriptions of Jesus in the entire Bible. Paul covers everything: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, even the powers and authorities that govern the universe. ALL of it was created BY Him, THROUGH Him, and FOR Him. And the final statement is breathtaking: “in him all things hold together.” Jesus is not just the Creator who made the world and stepped back. He is actively sustaining every created thing at every moment. This means the universe is not running on its own – it is running in Him. Faith in Jesus is not a side interest; it is the foundation of all reality.
Hero Challenge
Whenever you feel like things are falling apart this week – a hard day, a fight with a friend, something scary or uncertain – stop and remember: Jesus holds all things together. He’s not surprised. He’s not panicking. Write the phrase “He holds it together” somewhere you’ll see it – your mirror, your notebook, your phone case – and let it anchor you when life feels shaky.
Did You Know?
The phrase “all things hold together” in Greek (synesteken) carries the idea of a binding force – something actively keeping things from flying apart. Scientists today know that at the subatomic level, particles are held together by forces that are still not fully understood. Followers of Jesus have always pointed to Colossians 1:17 as a reminder that the deepest reality of the universe is not physics – it’s a Person.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
If Jesus holds everything together, does that mean He’s taking care of you too? Can you think of something in your life that Jesus is taking care of right now?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
Paul says everything was made FOR Jesus – not just BY Him. What do you think it means that creation exists for Him? How should that change the way we think about our own purpose?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
Colossians 1:16-17 makes a massive claim – that Jesus is before all things and sustains all things. How does this change the way you think about science, the universe, and where you fit in the story? What does it mean for your everyday faith?
♥ Mission Prayer
Jesus, thank You that You hold all things together — including me. When my world feels chaotic or scary, remind me that You are not surprised and that nothing is outside Your care. Help me to trust You as the One who made all things and keeps all things in Your hands.
