Mission Briefing
A Feast in the Middle of the Fight
Imagine sitting down to an amazing feast while your enemies can only watch – and then realizing that God’s goodness and mercy have been following you your whole life. That’s what David is celebrating in these incredible verses! This mission explores Psalm 23:5-6.
What Does Psalm 23:5-6 Mean?
God doesn’t just protect us from enemies – He actually blesses us in front of them! Anointing with oil was a sign of being chosen and honored. An overflowing cup means God’s blessings are more than enough – they spill over. And David ends with a declaration of confidence: goodness and mercy won’t just visit him occasionally, they will FOLLOW him every day of his life. That’s not wishful thinking – that’s faith speaking!
Hero Challenge
At the end of each day this week, write down two things: one blessing from God you spotted that day, and one way you saw His mercy (His kindness when you didn’t deserve it). By the end of the week, look back at your list. Do you see goodness and mercy following you?
Did You Know?
In ancient Middle Eastern culture, anointing a guest’s head with oil and giving them a generous feast was one of the highest forms of honor a host could show. David was saying that God – the King of the universe – treats us like honored guests at His own table. That picture says everything about how much God values us.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
Can you name two good things God gave you today? Let’s thank Him for those right now!
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
What does it mean to you that God’s goodness and mercy “follow” you every day? How does that change how you feel about hard days?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
David wrote this in the middle of a very difficult life full of enemies and hardship. How could he be so sure that goodness and mercy were following him? What does that kind of faith look like, and how can you develop it?
