**THE DEEPER MEANING OF JACHIN & BOAZ:** The Mysterious Pillars of Solomon’s Temple In **1 Kings 7**, we read about two massive bronze pillars that stood at the entrance of Solomon’s Temple. Solomon gave them names: **Jachin** and **Boaz**. Why did he do this, and what hidden meaning lies behind the raising of these two pillars? On the surface, it seems simple. But in the ancient world, names were never accidental. Naming was an act of prophecy, revelation, and theology. And when we look deeper, we discover that these pillars were not mere decoration or architectural beauty. They stood as **symbolic guardians**, proclaiming a message every worshipper needed to hear before entering the presence of God. The Meaning of the Names **Jachin (יָכִין)** means: **“He establishes,” “The Lord makes firm.”** **Boaz (בֹּעַז)** means: **“In Him is strength,” “By strength.”** Together, they form a divine declaration: **“The Lord establishes… and in Him there is strength.”** Before a priest even set foot into the Temple, he walked through a spiritual portal, a threshold, a transition zone from the earthly to the heavenly. For the pillars proclaimed this truth: * You do not enter by your own ability. * You do not enter by your own righteousness or by standing in your own strength. **God establishes you. God strengthens you.** These are the *rules of access* into His presence. When we read the book of Genesis and later, the wilderness journey, we see Israel protected and guided by **two pillars**: the pillar of cloud and the pillar of fire. These two pillars in the Temple reflect the same pattern: * **Jachin (right)** - the establishing, ordering presence * **Boaz (left)** - the strengthening, protective fire It’s as if God is saying: **“The same Presence that carried you through the wilderness is the Presence that welcomes you into My house.”** In Hebrew symbolism: * **The right side** represents mercy, order, stability. * **The left side** represents strength, authority, justice. Together, they reveal a balanced picture of God’s nature. Bronze in Scripture symbolizes **purity and judgment**. Bronze is the combination of **earth + fire**, a picture of humanity strengthened and refined by God’s fire. The message is clear: **Only through God’s purification and God’s strength can we enter His presence.** The decorations on the pillars; **lilies, pomegranates, and chains**, echo the imagery of **Eden**. They whisper: **“When you walk through these pillars, you return to what you were originally created for purity, abundance, and restoration.”** Jewish tradition says the two pillars represented **“the two legs of the King,”** the One upon whom the world stands, pointing forward to the Messiah. In this light: * **Jachin** points to Christ, who establishes the New Covenant. * **Boaz** points to Christ, who strengthens His people with the Spirit. The Temple was completed **2,989 years ago** and has long since been destroyed. But the good news is this: **Through Christ’s death, we have become part of His Body, the living Temple.** In Revelation, God promises: **“I will make you a pillar in the temple of My God.”** So now, through Christ, you carry the meaning of the pillars within your own life: **God establishes you. God strengthens you. You enter by His grace, not by your own power. He restores you to your original design. And in Christ,** ***you*** **become a pillar in the house of God.**
