The Greatest Step Down in History
Imagine being the most powerful person in the universe – and choosing to become a baby. Choosing to wash dirty feet. Choosing to die for people who didn’t even want you. That’s exactly what Jesus did, and Paul says: think like that!
What Does This Mean?
Jesus was fully God – equal with God in every way – but He didn’t hold on to that status like a prize. He “emptied Himself” and became a servant, a human being, and then went all the way to death on a cross. This is the ultimate example of humility. Paul tells us to have that same mind – to think the way Jesus thought, putting others above ourselves.
Hero Challenge
This week, find one opportunity to serve someone when you don’t have to – and do it without telling anyone or expecting praise. Maybe it’s cleaning up something you didn’t mess up, helping a younger kid, or doing a chore before being asked. True humility is service that doesn’t need an audience. Try it and see how it feels!
Did You Know?
Scholars believe the passage in Philippians 2:5-11 may have been an early hymn sung by believers in the first century church. That means the people who knew Jesus’ disciples personally would have SUNG these words about Jesus becoming a servant! Imagine starting every gathering by singing about how the King of the universe became a servant. That’s a community-shaping song.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
Jesus was the most important person ever, but He chose to be a helper and a servant. Can you think of one way you can be a helper today?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
Jesus “emptied himself” to serve others. What are some things that might be hard for you to give up in order to serve someone else?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
Paul says to have the “mind” of Christ – meaning our thinking, not just our actions, should change. How does thinking of yourself as a servant first (not a boss) change the way you move through the world every day?
♥ Mission Prayer
Jesus, You are the greatest example of humility I will ever see. Help me to have Your mind — to serve without expecting praise and to put others before myself. Amen.
