Mission Briefing
Better Than Before
Have you ever had something go wrong that actually ended up turning into something even better than you expected? Paul wrote a letter about exactly that kind of story – and it’s one of the most touching moments in the whole Bible!
What Does This Mean?
Paul is writing to a man named Philemon about his runaway slave, Onesimus, who had become a believer. Paul says maybe God allowed the separation so that Philemon could get Onesimus back – not just as a servant, but as a BROTHER. Faith in Jesus changes how we see people. Someone who was once just a worker becomes family. That’s what the gospel does – it upgrades every relationship.
Hero Challenge
Think of someone in your life you maybe haven’t thought of as a true friend – maybe someone younger, older, or very different from you. This week, treat them like a brother or sister. Invite them into a conversation, share something with them, or simply ask how they’re doing. You might be surprised at what happens!
Did You Know?
Philemon is one of the shortest books in the Bible – just 25 verses – but it packs a huge punch! It’s a personal letter from Paul asking Philemon to forgive Onesimus and accept him as a fellow believer. This letter is one of the earliest Bible examples of how faith in Jesus breaks down social barriers and makes people equal before God.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
Jesus makes all of us part of God’s family! Can you name one person at school or church who is your brother or sister in God’s family?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
Why do you think it mattered so much to Paul that Philemon see Onesimus as a “dear brother” and not just a servant?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
Paul says Onesimus is now better than a servant – he’s a brother. How does our shared faith change the way we should treat people who are different from us in status, age, or background?
♥ Mission Prayer
Lord, help me to see every person as someone You love and as a potential brother or sister in Your family. Give me eyes to see past labels and treat people the way You do. Amen.
