What Does Numbers 23:19 Mean?

These words were spoken by a prophet named Balaam – and this is surprising because Balaam was hired by Israel’s enemies to curse God’s people! Instead, every time he opened his mouth, blessings came out. He could not curse what God had already chosen to bless. In the middle of his prophecy, he declared this timeless truth: God does not lie, and God does not change His mind the way humans do. His promises are rock solid because He is rock solid.

Make a list of three promises from the Bible that you can personally hold on to – maybe God’s promise to never leave you, to give you strength, or to work all things together for good. Write them on index cards with the reference. When you feel worried or uncertain this week, pull out a card and read it out loud. God’s promises are not just words – they are guarantees.

Balaam is one of the most unusual characters in all of Scripture. He was not an Israelite, yet God used him to speak some of the most powerful prophetic blessings over Israel. In fact, one of his prophecies (Numbers 24:17) is believed to point forward to Jesus Himself – “a star shall come out of Jacob.” God can speak truth through the most unexpected people and places!
