What Does Matthew 6:3 Mean?

In Jesus’s time, some people would make a big show of giving to the poor so that everyone would clap for them and think they were great. Jesus said that’s the wrong reason to give! He taught that the best giving is done quietly, without bragging or waiting for a “thank you.” When your left hand doesn’t know what your right hand is doing, it means the giving is so private that even YOU aren’t keeping score!

Plan a secret act of generosity this week – leave an encouraging note anonymously, donate something without telling anyone, or do a chore for a family member before they wake up. The goal is to give without getting credit. Notice how it feels to give secretly!

Did You Know?

Jesus gave this teaching as part of the famous Sermon on the Mount, which is found in Matthew chapters 5 through 7. It’s one of the longest recorded teachings of Jesus! In this same sermon, He also taught about prayer and fasting – and He gave the same advice for each: do it privately, for God, not for a crowd.
