Mission Briefing
Where Is Your Real Treasure Hidden?
Imagine finding a treasure chest – would you bury it in a place where it could be stolen or rust away? Jesus says a lot of people do exactly that with their hearts! He wants to show us where to keep the things that matter most. This mission explores Matthew 6:19-21.
What Does Matthew 6:19-21 Mean?
Jesus is telling us that earthly stuff – toys, money, gadgets – can be lost, broken, stolen, or worn out. But when we invest in things that matter to God – being kind, loving others, following Him – those things last forever. The really interesting part is the last sentence: wherever you put your treasure is where your heart goes too. So what you care most about reveals what you truly love.
Hero Challenge
Take a piece of paper and draw two treasure chests – label one “Earth Treasure” and one “Heaven Treasure.” Write or draw what fills each one in your life right now. Then ask yourself: which chest is getting more attention from your heart this week?
Did You Know?
In Jesus’ day, wealthy people stored their treasures in their homes – expensive clothes (which moths could eat!), metals (which rusted), and gold (which thieves stole). Jesus used everyday examples His listeners knew well to make the point land hard. He was always connecting big truths to real everyday life.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
What is one thing you really, really love? Do you think God would call that a treasure?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
What do you think “treasure in heaven” actually looks like – what kinds of things count?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
Jesus says your heart follows your treasure. Based on where you spend your time and attention, what does that say about what your heart truly values right now?
♥ Mission Prayer
Jesus, help my heart treasure the things that last forever. Show me when I'm holding too tightly to things that will fade away, and help me store up what really matters. Amen.
