Mission Briefing
Forgive Before You Pray
Did you know that unforgiveness can actually get in the way of your prayers? Jesus says that when we come to God in prayer, we should check our hearts first – and let go of anything we are holding against someone else. This mission explores Mark 11:25.
What Does Mark 11:25 Mean?
Jesus is connecting two things that seem separate: our prayers to God and our forgiveness of others. He is showing us that our relationship with God and our relationship with people are deeply linked. When we come to God with bitterness or unforgiveness in our hearts, it creates a kind of blockage. Choosing to forgive opens the door to a real, free conversation with our Heavenly Father.
Hero Challenge
Before your prayer time each day this week, take thirty seconds to ask yourself: “Is there anyone I am holding something against?” If the answer is yes, whisper a quick prayer of release – “God, I choose to forgive ____.” Then pray the rest of your prayer knowing your heart is clear.
Did You Know?
This verse comes right after Jesus curses a fig tree and teaches about the power of faith in prayer (Mark 11:22-24). Jesus was showing His disciples that faith-filled prayer and a forgiving heart go hand in hand. You cannot separate bold, faith-filled prayer from a life of forgiveness – they belong together.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
When you talk to God, do you like it to feel clear and open? What can you do before you pray to make sure your heart is ready?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
Why do you think Jesus connects forgiveness with prayer? How do you think holding a grudge might affect the way you talk to God?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
Jesus does not say forgiveness must feel complete before you pray – He says to choose it. What is the difference between choosing to forgive in a moment of prayer versus waiting until you feel completely okay with what happened?
♥ Mission Prayer
Father, help me to come to You with a clean heart, free from bitterness and grudges. Before I pray today, I choose to forgive anyone who has hurt me. Thank You for forgiving me so completely, and help me to pass that forgiveness on. Amen.
