Mission Briefing
Jesus Came to Set People Free
Imagine walking into your school and announcing the most exciting news in history. That’s exactly what Jesus did when He stood up in the synagogue and read these words – He was announcing His mission to the whole world! This mission explores Luke 4:18-19.
What Does Luke 4:18-19 Mean?
Jesus read these words from the scroll of Isaiah in His hometown synagogue – it was His way of saying, “This is why I’m here!” He came to bring good news to people who were struggling, to free those who felt trapped, to give sight to those who couldn’t see, and to lift up those who were being crushed by hard circumstances. The “year of the Lord’s favor” was a special time in the Old Testament when debts were forgiven and people were given a fresh start. Jesus was saying that because of Him, every day can be a fresh start!
Hero Challenge
Jesus brought good news and freedom to people around Him – and He invites you to do the same! This week, think of someone who seems burdened, discouraged, or left out. Bring them good news in the form of encouragement, a kind note, or an offer to help. Be a little piece of Jesus’s mission in their life.
Did You Know?
When Jesus read from Isaiah 61 in the synagogue, He then rolled up the scroll, sat down, and said, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” Everyone in the room was stunned – He was saying that He Himself was the fulfillment of an ancient promise God had made hundreds of years earlier! This moment in Luke 4 is often called Jesus’s “mission statement” for His entire ministry on earth.
