Mission Briefing

Don’t Let Your Heart Be Shaken

Has your heart ever felt worried, scared, or unsettled – like a storm was brewing inside your chest? Jesus looks right at you in this moment and says two simple words that can change everything: “Trust Me.” This mission explores John 14:1.

What Does John 14:1 Mean?

Jesus spoke these words on the night before His crucifixion, knowing that His disciples were about to face the most confusing and terrifying event of their lives. He was about to be arrested, and they didn’t understand what was happening. His answer wasn’t a complicated plan – it was a call to trust. “Believe in God; believe also in me.” Jesus was saying: the same God you have always trusted is worthy of trust right now, and so am I. When everything feels out of control, trust is the antidote to fear.

Hero Challenge

This week, write down one thing that is making your heart feel troubled or worried. Then write out John 14:1 next to it as a prayer, replacing “your hearts” with “my heart.” When worry starts to creep in, say this verse out loud. Practice trusting God with the specific thing that worries you most.

Did You Know?

John 14 is part of what scholars call Jesus’s “Farewell Discourse” – the long, heartfelt conversation He had with His disciples during their last meal together before His death. Jesus covers enormous topics in this section: heaven, the Holy Spirit, prayer, peace, and His return. Yet He starts it all with this tender command not to be troubled. In the original Greek, the word for “troubled” means to be stirred up, shaken, or thrown into confusion – and Jesus is literally saying “stop letting your hearts be thrown into confusion.”

Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question

Jesus says “don’t let your heart be troubled!” Can you think of one thing you could tell Jesus when you feel scared or worried?

Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question

Jesus said these words when His friends were about to go through something really scary. How does knowing that Jesus cares about your worried heart help you when things feel out of control?

Ages 10-13: Champion Question

Jesus’s solution to a troubled heart is simply “believe.” Why do you think trust is the key to overcoming fear and anxiety? Is there a difference between believing God exists and truly trusting Him? What does real trust look like in a hard situation?
