Mission Briefing

You Can’t Out-Give God

Have you ever tried to give someone a gift and they gave you an even bigger one right back? With people that can happen – but with God it’s literally impossible. Nothing we could ever give Him started with us. Everything – every breath, every talent, every idea – came from Him first. And that’s actually a reason to cheer! This mission explores Job 41:11.

What Does Job 41:11 Mean?

Job 41:11 comes from the awe-inspiring moment when God speaks to Job from a whirlwind. God is establishing something foundational: He is the original source of all things. “Who has first given to me, that I should repay him?” is a rhetorical question – the answer is no one. No human has ever given God anything that God didn’t first provide. This is a profound call to humility. We cannot put God in debt to us. Whatever we offer – our service, our talents, our resources – we are simply returning to Him what was already His. And He receives it not because He is obligated, but because He is gracious and loves to involve us in His purposes.

Hero Challenge

Make a list of five things you are really proud of – maybe a skill, a talent, something you’ve worked hard at. Then next to each one, write: “This started with God.” Your brain, your hands, your creativity, your opportunities – trace each one back to its source. How does this exercise change the way you feel about those things? Does it make you more or less grateful?

Did You Know?

The book of Job contains some of the oldest poetry in the Bible, and the speech God gives from the whirlwind (chapters 38-41) is considered one of the most magnificent pieces of literature in human history. God’s questions to Job were not meant to crush him, but to open his eyes to a reality far bigger than his own suffering. Understanding who God is – the source and owner of all – actually brings comfort, not shame.

Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question

Where did your brain, your hands, and your ideas come from? (God made them!) So when you do something great, who should you thank first?

Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question

God asks, “Who has given to me first?” – meaning no one can give God something He didn’t already provide. How should that change the way we feel about being proud of our accomplishments?

Ages 10-13: Champion Question

Job 41:11 is a humbling verse, but it comes from a place of God’s greatness – not harshness. How does understanding that you can’t put God in your debt actually free you to give and serve without keeping score or expecting anything in return?

♥ Mission Prayer

Lord, thank You for being the source of every good gift in my life. Help me to hold my talents and abilities with open hands, remembering that they all started with You. Teach me to be humble enough to give freely, knowing I can never out-give the One who gave me everything.
