Mission Briefing
Ephesians 6:16 introduces one of the coolest pieces of armor: the shield of faith. In Bible times, Roman soldiers carried huge shields – tall enough to crouch behind completely. And they could be soaked in water to put out flaming arrows. That image is exactly what God is giving us. Because the enemy shoots fiery arrows too – except they’re not made of wood and fire. They’re made of lies and doubts and fears. Thoughts like “God doesn’t care about you” or “you’re not good enough” or “nothing will ever get better.”
Faith is what blocks those arrows. When a scary thought comes flying at you, faith says: “That’s not true. I know what God says.” It doesn’t mean the arrow doesn’t come. It means it doesn’t get through. And the more you know God – the more you read His Word, talk to Him, trust Him – the bigger and stronger your shield gets. Faith isn’t just a feeling. It’s a decision you make to believe what God says over what fear says.
What Does Ephesians 6:16 Mean?
What are the arrows flying at you right now? Worry about school? Fear about what other kids think? Doubt about whether God is real? Name them. Then hold up your shield – find a Bible verse that speaks truth into that exact fear, and say it out loud. That’s faith in action. That’s your shield doing its job.
Mission Activity
Cut a shield shape out of cardboard or folded paper. On the outside, write the lies or fears that come at you most often. On the INSIDE (the side facing you), write what GOD says is true – use Bible verses or just your own words. Decorate it. Hold it up. This is your shield of faith. (Note: the verse above is paraphrased to help younger readers connect with its meaning. The original is Ephesians 6:16 NIV.)
♥ Mission Prayer
Dear God, when doubts and lies come flying at me, help my faith be strong enough to block them. Remind me of what's true when things feel confusing. I trust You more than I trust my fears. Amen.
