Mission Briefing
You Are Light – So Walk Like It!
Have you ever walked into a dark room and turned on a light? Everything changes! The Bible says that because of Jesus, YOU are light. Not just someone carrying a light – you ARE light. And with that comes an amazing mission: walk in a way that shows it! This mission explores Ephesians 5:8-9.
What Does Ephesians 5:8-9 Mean?
Ephesians 5:8-9 reminds believers of an incredible transformation. Before knowing God, people live in spiritual darkness – confused, self-focused, disconnected from what is good and true. But in the Lord, that changes completely. Paul says we ARE light – not that we will be light someday, but that it’s who we are right now. And light doesn’t hide; it shines. The fruit of walking in the light includes everything good, right, and true. When we live as children of light, people around us see goodness, honesty, and love – and those things point right back to God.
Hero Challenge
Be a light in one dark situation this week. Maybe there’s a kid at school who feels left out – include them. Maybe someone around you is being unkind – be the one who speaks up for what is right. Write down afterward what happened when you chose to walk as a child of light. Light always changes what’s around it!
Did You Know?
Ephesus, where this letter was sent, was a city famous for its practice of magic and the occult. Paul’s readers had come out of real spiritual darkness – some had even burned their books of magic spells after meeting Jesus (Acts 19:19)! Paul was reminding them: you used to be in that darkness, but now everything has changed. Their light was a powerful contrast to the world around them – and so is yours.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
What happens when you turn on a light in a dark room? How can YOU be a light for someone who is feeling sad or lonely today?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
Paul says the fruit of light is “all that is good and right and true.” Can you give an example of each one? Which of those three is easiest for you, and which is hardest?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
Paul says “you WERE darkness, but now you ARE light.” This is about identity, not just behavior. How does knowing that light is WHO you are – not just what you do – change the way you think about your choices every day?
♥ Mission Prayer
Thank You, Lord, for making me a child of light. Help me to walk in a way that shows Your goodness, truth, and righteousness to everyone around me. When it's easier to blend into the darkness, give me the courage to shine.
