Mission Briefing
Truth + Love = Growth!
Have you ever had to tell a friend something hard to hear — like spinach in their teeth, or that they accidentally hurt someone’s feelings? Paul says doing that with kindness is actually one of the most important ways God’s family grows together!
What Does This Mean?
Paul describes God’s family like a body — Jesus is the head, and we are all connected parts. When each part does its job well, the whole body gets stronger. “Speaking the truth in love” means being honest but also being kind — not brutal honesty that tears people down, and not fake niceness that avoids hard conversations. It’s the balance of both truth and love working together that helps everyone grow.
Hero Challenge
Think of a time when someone spoke the truth to you with kindness — maybe a parent, teacher, or friend — and it helped you grow. Write them a thank-you note or tell them this week. Then think: is there a kind and true thing you need to say to someone?
Did You Know?
Ephesians was written by Paul while he was under house arrest in Rome. Even though he was confined, he was thinking deeply about how communities of faith could grow strong and stay united. The phrase “speaking the truth in love” is just four words in Greek — but those four words have shaped how faith communities try to talk to each other for thousands of years!
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
If a friend had their shirt on backwards, would you tell them? How would you tell them in a kind way?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
What is the difference between saying something true that is mean and saying something true that is kind? Can you give an example?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
Paul links truth-speaking to growth. Why do you think avoiding hard conversations — even with good intentions — can actually prevent people from growing?
♥ Mission Prayer
God, help me be brave enough to be honest and kind enough to be gentle. Teach me how to speak truth in love, so that the people around me can grow. Amen.
