Look Up: Setting Your Mind on What Matters Most
Have you ever been so focused on your phone, a game, or a show that you forgot everything happening around you? Paul wants us to have that same laser focus – but aimed upward, toward God. It changes everything about how you live!
What Does This Mean?
Paul says that because we have new life in Jesus, we should think and live differently. “Seek the things above” means making God’s priorities our priorities – things like love, peace, kindness, and truth. “Set your minds on things that are above” is about what you fill your thoughts with every day. It doesn’t mean ignoring real life – it means filtering your daily choices through a heavenly lens, asking: what would Jesus want me to do here?
Hero Challenge
Each morning this week, before you check your phone, watch TV, or do anything else, spend two minutes thinking about one “heavenly thing” – something God values, like being kind to someone you find difficult. Let that thought shape how your day starts.
Did You Know?
Paul wrote Colossians while he was in prison – probably in Rome. Even from prison, his mind was fixed on things above! The phrase “seated at the right hand of God” was a way of saying Jesus holds all authority and power. Knowing that Jesus is in charge helped Paul stay at peace even in the toughest circumstances.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
What do you think “up above” where Jesus is looks like? What good things do you think happen there?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
What are some “earthly things” that can distract us from thinking about God, and how could we put those in their right place?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
Paul says to set your mind intentionally. How much control do you think you have over what you think about, and what habits help you keep your focus on what truly matters?
♥ Mission Prayer
God, help me set my mind on You every single day. When I get distracted by things that don't last, bring my eyes back to what is true, good, and lasting. Amen.
