"Turn away from wrong things, be baptized in Jesus' name, and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit — it's for everyone!" (Paraphrased for younger readers — original: Acts 2:38 NIV)
Acts 2:38

Mission Briefing

Acts 2:38 is Peter’s answer to one of the most important questions ever asked: “What should we do?” The people had just heard about Jesus – who He was, what He did, how He died and rose again – and they felt the weight of it. Something had to change. Peter’s answer was clear: turn around, be baptized, and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Three steps. A new beginning. The slate wiped clean and something new poured in.

Repentance sounds like a scary word, but it just means turning around. Imagine you’re walking down a road and you realize it’s taking you in the wrong direction. Repentance is the moment you stop, turn around, and go the right way instead. It’s not about feeling terrible forever – it’s about choosing a different direction. And the gift that follows that turn? The Holy Spirit, living inside you, guiding you, helping you go the right way from here on out.

What Does Acts 2:38 Mean?

You don’t have to keep going the wrong direction just because you’ve been going that way for a while. It’s never too late to turn around. Repentance isn’t punishment – it’s permission to start fresh. And the Holy Spirit isn’t a reward for getting everything right – He’s a gift given to people who turn toward God. Receiving Him means you’re not making this journey alone anymore. You have a Guide who knows every step of the road ahead. A new beginning is always available to you.

Mission Activity

Draw a winding road on a piece of paper. At a clear fork in the road, draw a sign on one path labeled “Old Way” and one labeled “New Way.” On the “New Way” path, write or draw three things you want to do differently – ways you want to live that reflect turning toward God. Put a little figure of yourself at the fork, facing the New Way. Keep it as a visual reminder that you can always choose to turn around. (Note: the verse above is paraphrased to help younger readers connect with its meaning. The original is Acts 2:38 NIV.)

♥ Mission Prayer

Dear God, thank You that it's never too late to turn around. Thank You for the gift of Your Spirit. Help me not to hold onto old wrong ways when a fresh start is right there waiting for me. I want to go in a new direction — with You. Amen.
