Mission Briefing
Something Better Is Coming
Sometimes the world around us can feel broken, confusing, or unfair. But Peter shares an incredible promise – God is preparing something completely new, and in that new world, only goodness and righteousness will be at home! This mission explores 2 Peter 3:13.
What Does 2 Peter 3:13 Mean?
Peter is writing to encourage believers who are wondering what the future holds. He reminds them of God’s promise of “new heavens and a new earth” – an entirely remade creation where everything wrong about the old world is gone. The most important feature of this new world is that “righteousness dwells” there – meaning right living, fairness, goodness, and God’s perfect ways will be the very atmosphere of this new creation. There will be no evil, no injustice, no decay. Just pure, beautiful life with God.
Hero Challenge
Because we are waiting for a world of righteousness, we should practice righteousness now! This week, be intentional about making right and good choices in your everyday life – at home, at school, and online. Think of it as practicing for the world that is coming. What does it look like to let righteousness “dwell” in your heart right now?
Did You Know?
Peter references the promise of new heavens and a new earth, which goes all the way back to the prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 65:17). This vision has captured the imagination of God’s people for thousands of years. It’s not about escaping creation but about God renewing and perfecting it – a bit like restoring a broken masterpiece back to something even more glorious than the original. The new earth isn’t a different planet; it’s this world made perfectly right.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
God promises to make a brand-new world someday! What is one thing that is broken or sad in the world that you would love to see God make right?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
Peter says we are “waiting” for the new earth. How can the hope of that future world help you make good choices and stay patient today?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
Peter describes a new earth where righteousness “dwells” – it’s not just visiting, it lives there permanently. How does this vision of the future motivate you to pursue righteousness now, before that day comes? What would it look like to let righteousness dwell in your own heart and home?
