Mission Briefing
Test It, Keep It, Drop It
Imagine you’re a hero with a special detector – one that can sniff out what is good and what is harmful. The Bible actually gives you exactly that! God wants you to be wise enough to test everything around you and hold on tight to what is good. This mission explores 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22.
What Does 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22 Mean?
First Thessalonians 5:21-22 gives believers three clear actions: test, hold, and abstain. Testing everything means we don’t simply accept ideas, influences, or habits without thinking about whether they line up with God’s truth. Holding fast to good means that once we find what is right, we grip it like a treasure and don’t let go. Abstaining from every form of evil goes beyond just avoiding big wrongs – it means steering clear of anything that nudges us away from God’s way. Together, these three steps form a lifestyle of holy discernment – thinking carefully, choosing wisely, and living differently.
Hero Challenge
Pick one show, song, or app you use regularly. Run it through the hero test: Does it lead me closer to what is true and good? Does it make me want to be kinder, more honest, or more grateful? Or does it pull me in a different direction? Be honest with yourself and talk to a parent or trusted adult about what you discover. A hero is always willing to do the hard, honest check!
Did You Know?
The city of Thessalonica was a busy port city in ancient Greece, full of different religions and ideas. Paul’s readers were surrounded by a culture that offered many competing beliefs. That’s exactly why Paul urged them to test everything – not to be suspicious of everyone, but to be thoughtful and grounded in what God says is true. That skill is just as important today!
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
If your friend dared you to do something that felt wrong inside, what would you do? (Hint: a hero says “no” to things that are not good!)
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
What does it mean to “test” something? How can you tell if something is good or not so good for your heart and mind?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
Paul says to abstain from “every form” of evil – not just the obvious stuff. What are some subtle influences in your world that might need a closer look? How does testing things against God’s Word help you decide?
♥ Mission Prayer
God, give me wisdom to test the things I see, hear, and experience every day. Help me to hold tightly to what is good and true, and give me the courage to walk away from anything that pulls me away from You. I want to be a hero who chooses wisely.
