Mission Briefing
The One Thing Every Steward Must Have
Imagine you were trusted to manage a great king’s treasury while he was away. You’d have one main job: don’t blow it. Be faithful. That’s exactly what God asks of everyone He trusts with His gifts – and He’s trusted YOU with a whole lot more than you might realize! This mission explores 1 Corinthians 4:2.
What Does 1 Corinthians 4:2 Mean?
First Corinthians 4:2 is short but packed with weight: faithfulness is the non-negotiable requirement for a steward. A steward in the ancient world was someone entrusted to manage another person’s household or property. They weren’t the owner – they were the manager. And the one thing required of them was not cleverness, or wealth, or impressive results. It was faithfulness. God has entrusted every person with gifts: time, talents, relationships, resources, and the good news of the gospel itself. The question He will ask is not “How much did you accumulate?” but “Were you faithful with what I gave you?”
Hero Challenge
Write down three things God has entrusted to you – it could be a friendship, a skill, a responsibility, or your own body and health. Next to each one, honestly rate yourself: Am I being faithful with this? Then choose one area to improve this week and make a specific plan for how you’ll be a more faithful steward of that gift.
Did You Know?
In the Roman world, a household steward (oikonomos in Greek) was often a trusted slave or freedman who ran the entire estate – managing finances, servants, and resources. The owner’s trust was everything. Paul uses this widely understood role to describe every believer’s relationship to God. We are stewards of God’s mysteries, His grace, and His gifts – and the standard is faithfulness, not fame or results.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
If a friend asked you to take care of their favorite toy while they were away, what would you do? How is that like being a faithful steward for God?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
Paul says faithfulness is REQUIRED of stewards. Why do you think faithfulness matters more to God than being the smartest or most talented person?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
1 Corinthians 4:2 says stewards must be “found” faithful – meaning discovered to be faithful over time, not just in a single moment. How does that change the way you think about daily habits and consistency? What areas of your life need more long-term faithfulness?

Lord, I want to be found faithful with everything You have entrusted to me. Help me to see my gifts, time, and responsibilities as things You've placed in my care — and give me the strength and character to manage them well for Your glory.
