Mission Briefing
Four Things God Is Asking For
God gave a clear, practical list of instructions through the prophet Zechariah – and it’s just as powerful today as it was thousands of years ago. Four commands that could change everything if we actually did them! This mission explores Zechariah 7:9-10.
What Does Zechariah 7:9-10 Mean?
God lays out four clear calls: judge fairly, show kindness and mercy, don’t oppress the vulnerable (widows, orphans, foreigners, the poor), and don’t even plan evil in your heart against others. Notice that last one – God isn’t just regulating actions; He’s reaching into our thoughts and motivations. He wants us to be people of justice and compassion from the inside out, not just on the outside when others are watching.
Hero Challenge
Pick one of the four commands from this verse and make it your mission this week. Either judge a situation fairly instead of jumping to conclusions, show extra kindness to someone, protect someone being treated badly, or when a mean thought about someone pops into your head – choose not to let it stay there. Replace it with something kind instead.
Did You Know?
Zechariah ministered alongside the prophet Haggai after the Israelites returned from exile in Babylon. The people had been asking God about religious rituals, and God’s answer was basically: before you ask me about your ceremonies, let’s talk about how you treat people. God always cares more about justice and kindness than religious performance.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
God says to be kind and not be mean – even in our thoughts! What’s a kind thing you can think about someone today?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
God tells us not to oppress the widow, orphan, foreigner, or poor. What does “oppress” mean, and why do you think God especially cares about protecting these groups of people?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
One of God’s four commands here is not to “devise evil against another in your heart” – meaning even thinking about how to hurt someone is wrong. How does this challenge you? What habits could help you guard your thoughts and motivations, not just your actions?
♥ Mission Prayer
Lord of hosts, help me live out all four things You're asking for: judging fairly, showing kindness and mercy, protecting the vulnerable, and guarding my heart from evil thoughts. Transform me from the inside out to be someone who truly looks like You. Amen.
