Mission Briefing
Hard Times Build Hero Character
Nobody likes hard times – but what if the tough stuff in your life was actually making you into a stronger, better, more amazing person? The Bible says that’s exactly what’s happening when you stick with God through difficulty! This mission explores Romans 5:3-5.
What Does Romans 5:3-5 Mean?
Paul explains an incredible chain reaction: suffering → endurance → character → hope. When we face hard things and keep trusting God through them, we build endurance (the ability to keep going). Endurance shapes our character (who we really are on the inside). And strong character produces real hope – not wishful thinking, but solid confidence that God is with us. And at the end of this chain is God’s own love poured right into our hearts!
Hero Challenge
Think about something hard you’re going through right now – a difficult friendship, a tough subject at school, or a frustrating situation at home. Write down how this challenge might be building your endurance and character. Then pray and thank God for the work He’s doing in you through it.
Did You Know?
Paul wrote this letter to the Romans while on one of his missionary journeys. He himself had been through incredible hardships – shipwrecks, beatings, imprisonment – and still he wrote about rejoicing! Paul wasn’t being fake; he had lived through the chain reaction he described and knew from personal experience that it was real.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
When something is hard, do you know that God is still with you? Can you think of one hard thing and ask God to help you be brave?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
Paul says suffering leads to endurance. Can you think of something difficult you went through that made you stronger? What did you learn from it?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
The verse says hope “does not put us to shame.” How is Biblical hope different from just wishing for something? How does God’s love – poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit – actually make enduring hard things possible?
