Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope,
Romans 5:3-4

Mission Briefing

Hard Times Build Something Amazing Inside You!

What if every hard thing you went through was secretly building something incredible inside of you? Paul discovered an amazing chain reaction – suffering leads to endurance, endurance leads to character, and character leads to hope. That’s a pretty powerful chain! This mission explores Romans 5:3-4.

What Does Romans 5:3-4 Mean?

Paul lays out a chain of growth: first comes suffering – the hard stuff we didn’t ask for. But if we stick with it, suffering builds endurance – the ability to keep going. Endurance then shapes our character – who we really are on the inside. And a strong character produces hope – a real, solid confidence that God is good and things will get better. This means our struggles are not wasted. They are working for us.

Hero Challenge

Draw the chain from this verse: Suffering → Endurance → Character → Hope. In each link of the chain, write a word or draw a picture of what that looks like in your own life. Hang it up as a reminder that hard things are building something great in you.

Did You Know?

Paul wrote this letter to believers in Rome – people who faced real difficulties and danger for their faith. He wasn’t writing from a comfortable place either. Paul himself had been beaten, imprisoned, and shipwrecked. He knew from experience that suffering truly does produce endurance and hope when we trust God through it.

Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question

When something hard happens, what can it help you grow? Can you think of something you got better at because you kept trying?

Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question

What is “endurance”? Can you think of a time you kept going even when it was hard? What did that build in you?

Ages 10-13: Champion Question

Paul says we can actually rejoice in suffering because of what it produces. Is that realistic? How do you think someone gets to the point of being joyful even in hard times?

♥ Mission Prayer

Father, help me to trust You when things are hard, knowing that You are building something good inside me. Give me endurance to keep going and hope that You are working even through the tough times. Amen.
