Mission Briefing
Real Love Is Not Fake
Have you ever given someone a compliment you did not really mean just to make them feel better? Paul says real love is nothing like that – it is genuine, which means it is completely real and honest, straight from the heart!
What Does This Mean?
Paul tells the Romans that love must be genuine – not a performance or just saying the right things. Genuine love means we truly care about good and truly hate what is wrong. It means loving each other like family – with warmth and belonging. And then Paul adds something wild: try to outdo each other in showing honor! Instead of competing to be the best, we should compete to honor others more than ourselves.
Hero Challenge
Start an “honor competition” with a sibling or friend this week – see who can find more genuine, creative ways to show the other person they are valued and appreciated. Keep it real, not fake. The goal is not to win, but to out-honor each other!
Did You Know?
The phrase “brotherly affection” in this verse comes from the Greek word “philadelphia” – which literally means love between brothers and sisters. It is the same root as the name of the city Philadelphia in Pennsylvania! Paul wanted followers of Jesus to treat each other like a close, caring family – not like strangers.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
What is the difference between a real compliment and a fake one? Can you give someone a real, genuine compliment today?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
Paul says to “outdo one another in showing honor.” What does that look like in real life – at home, at school, or with your friends?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
Paul says love must be genuine, and also says to hate what is evil. How do those two things work together? Can you truly love people well without also standing up for what is right?
♥ Mission Prayer
God, help my love to be real — not fake or just for show. Teach me to truly care about the people around me and to look for ways to honor them every day. Let me be the kind of person who makes others feel genuinely seen and valued. Amen.
