Mission Briefing
No Fear in the Dark Valley
Life isn’t always sunny and easy – sometimes it feels like we’re walking through a really dark, scary place. David knew those seasons too. And here’s what he discovered that changed everything! This mission explores Psalms 23:4.
What Does Psalms 23:4 Mean?
The “valley of the shadow of death” describes the darkest, scariest moments of life – loss, fear, sickness, or times when everything seems to go wrong. David doesn’t say he’ll skip the valley – he says he’ll walk THROUGH it. The reason he has no fear isn’t that the valley isn’t scary; it’s because God is WITH him in it. A shepherd’s rod protects the sheep from predators, and the staff guides them safely. God does both for us – He protects and guides us through every dark place.
Hero Challenge
Think about something that makes you feel afraid or anxious right now. Write it down, then write Psalm 23:4 underneath it. Memorize the verse this week, and every time that fear tries to creep in, recite it aloud. Let God’s Word speak louder than your fear.
Did You Know?
Actual shepherds in Israel used to walk their flocks through a narrow gorge near Jerusalem called the “Valley of the Shadow” – it was a rocky, dangerous path where wild animals would hide. David, who had personally fought off lions and bears while shepherding, used this very real image to describe God’s protection in life’s most dangerous moments.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
What is something that feels scary to you? Did you know God is always right there with you?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
Why is knowing that God is WITH you more powerful than the scary thing itself? How does His presence change the situation?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
David doesn’t say God will remove the dark valley – He walks through it with us. What does that tell you about how God works in hard times? How can that reshape the way you pray about difficulties?
♥ Mission Prayer
Lord, when I walk through dark and scary places, remind me that You are right there with me. I don't have to be afraid because You are my protector and guide. Help me to trust Your presence more than I fear the darkness.
