Mission Briefing
God Is Good and Always Ready to Forgive
Have you ever been afraid to ask for forgiveness because you thought the person might be too angry or too tired of your mistakes? David wants you to know something wonderful: God is never tired of forgiving – He is overflowing with it! This mission explores Psalm 86:5.
What Does Psalm 86:5 Mean?
David wrote this psalm when he was in trouble and calling out to God for help. He is confident that God will hear him because of who God is – good, forgiving, and overflowing with steadfast love. The word “abounding” means there is more than enough. God’s love and forgiveness are not running low. They are always full to the brim for everyone who calls on Him.
Hero Challenge
This week, memorize Psalm 86:5. Write it on a card, stick it to your mirror, and read it aloud each morning. When you feel unworthy or scared to come to God, let this verse remind you: He is good, He is forgiving, and His love is always there for you.
Did You Know?
Psalm 86 is one of the only psalms actually labeled “A Prayer of David” at the top. David wrote it in a moment of deep need, and he spent the whole psalm reminding himself – and us – of who God really is. He called out to God because he knew God’s character was trustworthy, not because everything felt fine.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
When you do something wrong, are you ever scared to tell God? What does this verse say that might help you feel better?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
David says God “abounds” in love – meaning there is more than enough. Why is it important to know that God’s love for you will never run out?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
David was in real trouble when he wrote this, but he started by focusing on who God is rather than on his own problems. How can focusing on God’s character – good, forgiving, loving – change the way you approach prayer when life is hard?
♥ Mission Prayer
Lord, thank You that You are good and forgiving, and that Your love for me is always overflowing. Help me to remember that I can always call on You — no matter what I have done — because You are ready and willing to forgive. I love You, God. Amen.
