Mission Briefing
The Fear-Slayer’s Secret Weapon
Everyone feels afraid sometimes – even the greatest heroes in the Bible! But David discovered the most powerful weapon against fear, and he couldn’t wait to tell everyone about it. Are you ready to find out what it is? This mission explores Psalm 34:4.
What Does Psalm 34:4 Mean?
David wrote this psalm while he was in a very dangerous situation – he was hiding from enemies who wanted to kill him. Yet his message is triumphant, not defeated. He had discovered through experience that when he turned to God in prayer – “I sought the LORD” – God answered and delivered him from fear. Notice he doesn’t say God removed the scary situation; he says God delivered him from his fears. The circumstances might stay difficult, but the fear itself is conquered when we run to God. That’s the secret: seek God first, and He will fight the fear with you.
Hero Challenge
This week, practice “seeking the LORD” the moment fear or anxiety shows up. Don’t wait until you’re overwhelmed – as soon as a worry pops up, stop and pray right then and there. It doesn’t have to be long: “Lord, I’m scared about ______. I seek You right now.” Watch what happens to the fear when you bring it immediately to God.
Did You Know?
Psalm 34 has a fascinating background story. The title tells us David wrote it “when he changed his behavior before Abimelech” – this refers to the incident in 1 Samuel 21 when David was on the run from King Saul and pretended to be insane in front of a Philistine king so he wouldn’t be captured. It was a desperate, humbling moment. Yet out of that terrifying situation came one of the most joyful and confident psalms in the whole Bible. Psalm 34 is also an acrostic – each verse starts with a different letter of the Hebrew alphabet, like a poem from A to Z!
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
David prayed to God when he was scared, and God helped him feel brave! What is something scary you could talk to God about right now?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
David says he “sought the LORD” and was delivered from his fears. What do you think it means to “seek” God? How is that different from just knowing God exists?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
David wasn’t delivered from the dangerous situation, but he was delivered from his fears. What does that distinction tell you about how God works in our lives? How does God’s presence change the experience of going through something scary, even when the scary thing doesn’t immediately go away?
