Mission Briefing
The Whole Earth Belongs to God
Look around you right now – the sky, the trees, the mountains, the ocean, even the chair you’re sitting in. Did you know that everything you can see – and everything you can’t – belongs to God? Not partly. Not mostly. ALL of it. That changes how we see and care for the world! This mission explores Psalm 24:1.
What Does Psalm 24:1 Mean?
Psalm 24:1 is one of the boldest ownership statements in the entire Bible. “The fullness thereof” means everything in the earth – all its people, animals, resources, beauty, and treasure. Nothing is outside of God’s ownership. This has huge implications for how we live. If everything belongs to God, then we are not owners – we are caretakers. We don’t get to use the earth’s resources any way we please; we are responsible to manage them the way the true Owner would want. That’s what stewardship means: taking great care of what belongs to someone else.
Hero Challenge
Go outside this week and spend five quiet minutes looking at creation – the sky, plants, bugs, birds, whatever you can find. Then ask yourself: if this all belongs to God, how would He want me to treat it? Come up with two specific ways you can be a better caretaker of His earth – maybe picking up litter, watering a plant, or being kinder to animals – and actually do them!
Did You Know?
Psalm 24 was written by King David and is thought to have been used as a processional song when the Ark of the Covenant was brought into Jerusalem. It opens with a declaration of God’s total ownership of the world – setting the stage for everything that follows about who gets to approach such a great God. Even ancient worship services began by remembering that everything belongs to Him!
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
Everything in the whole world belongs to God! Can you name three things outside that God made and owns? How does knowing that make you want to take care of them?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
If you borrowed your friend’s bike, would you treat it differently than your own? How should knowing the earth is God’s change how we treat it?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
Psalm 24:1 says God owns “those who dwell therein” – the people too. How does knowing that God owns not just the earth but also every person on it change the way you think about how we should treat each other?
♥ Mission Prayer
Lord, thank You for making such a beautiful world and trusting us to care for it. Help me to remember that everything I see belongs to You, and give me a heart that honors You by taking care of Your creation well. Teach me to be a faithful steward of all You have made.
