You Have the Best Shepherd
Imagine never having to worry about where your next meal comes from, whether you’re safe, or which direction to go – because someone amazing is taking care of all of it. That’s exactly what this psalm is about!
What Does This Mean?
King David – who actually was a shepherd himself – wrote this psalm to describe how God takes care of us the way a good shepherd cares for his sheep. Green pastures and still waters represent rest, peace, and having everything we need. When God restores our soul, He’s recharging us from the inside out. And when He leads us in right paths, He’s guiding our choices to keep us safe and on track.
Hero Challenge
Find a quiet spot this week – outside if you can – and spend five minutes just being still. Picture God as your shepherd watching over you, providing for you, and leading you. Then write down or tell someone one way you’ve seen God take care of you this week.
Did You Know?
Sheep are actually very dependent animals – they need a shepherd to find food, water, and safety because they can easily get lost or walk into danger on their own. David knew this from personal experience! By calling God his shepherd, David was humbly saying: “I need God to lead me, and I trust Him completely.”
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
Can you name one way that God takes care of you every day?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
What does it mean that “He restores my soul”? Have you ever felt tired or sad inside and then felt better after spending time with God?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
David wrote “I shall not want” – meaning God provides everything he truly needs. How can believing that change the way you handle worry, fear, or feelings of not having enough?
♥ Mission Prayer
Lord, thank You for being my shepherd — for providing what I need, giving me rest, and guiding my steps. Help me to follow Your lead instead of wandering off on my own. Restore my soul and keep me close to You.
