Proverbs 11:24

"Some people give freely and end up with more than they started with. Others hold everything tight and still end up with less!" (Paraphrased for younger readers — original: Proverbs 11:24 NIV)
Proverbs 11:24

Mission Briefing

Proverbs 11:24 breaks all the normal math rules: one person gives freely and gains more; another holds everything tight and ends up with less. That doesn’t make sense by calculator logic. But God’s economy works differently. Generosity isn’t subtraction – it’s multiplication. When you give with an open hand and a willing heart, something comes back that you couldn’t have created by holding on. It’s one of the most counterintuitive truths in the whole Bible.

Think about a candle. When you use one candle to light another, the first candle doesn’t get dimmer – both candles shine. That’s what real generosity does. It spreads without running out. It multiplies without being divided. Now think about a fist clenched tight around something precious. Nothing comes in. Nothing goes out. Just a grip that gets more anxious the tighter it holds. Generosity opens the hand. And open hands can both give and receive.

What Does Proverbs 11:24 Mean?

You have more to give than you think. It might be a toy you could share. It might be your time to help someone. It might be a kind word when someone’s having a bad day. It might be part of your allowance or some food you could give away. Whatever it is, God sees it when you give it freely – and He has a way of filling open hands back up. You don’t have to be afraid that giving will leave you with less. Generosity is never wasted. Try it and see.

Mission Activity

Do a “Generosity Challenge” this week. Look around your room and find three things: one to give away to someone who needs it, one to share, and one to offer as your time or help to someone else. Draw a simple chart with three columns – Give, Share, Help – and check them off as you do each one. At the end of the week, notice how you feel. (Note: the verse above is paraphrased to help younger readers connect with its meaning. The original is Proverbs 11:24 NIV.)

♥ Mission Prayer

Dear God, help me hold things loosely — my stuff, my time, my energy. Teach me that giving is not losing. I want to be someone who gives freely and trusts You to take care of the rest. Thank You for being so generous with me. Amen.
