Mission Briefing
Make Paul’s Joy Complete: Be One!
Paul was sitting in prison when he wrote to the Philippians – and yet he was full of joy! But he says there is one thing that would make his joy complete: if the believers in Philippi would be truly, deeply united. Unity brought him even more joy than his own freedom! This mission explores Philippians 2:2.
What Does Philippians 2:2 Mean?
Paul asks for four things in this verse: the same mind, the same love, full accord, and one mind. He’s not asking everyone to have the same opinion on every topic – he’s asking them to have the same loving attitude toward each other, rooted in who Jesus is. When a community is united in love, disagreements don’t destroy it. They work through things together, humbly and patiently, because love holds them together.
Hero Challenge
Is there a relationship in your life – with a sibling, friend, or classmate – where you are out of step with each other right now? This week, take one small step toward unity: listen to their side, apologize for something, or find one thing you genuinely agree on and build from there.
Did You Know?
The church in Philippi actually had a conflict between two specific women – Euodia and Syntyche – that Paul addresses directly just two chapters later in Philippians 4:2! Paul’s call for unity in chapter 2 wasn’t abstract – he was addressing real tension in a real community. Even the best faith communities have conflict; the question is how they handle it.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
When you and a sibling or friend disagree, what is one way you can try to make things right again?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
Paul says having the same love is part of being united. How does love help people get along even when they disagree?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
Paul’s joy was completed by the unity of others – not by his own comfort or freedom. What does that tell us about the kind of person he had become? What would it take for you to value unity that deeply?
