Mission Briefing
Real Righteousness Goes Way Deeper!
The scribes and Pharisees were famous for following every rule perfectly – everyone looked up to them as the most religious people around. So when Jesus said His followers needed to go BEYOND that, everyone must have gasped. What did He mean?! This mission explores Matthew 5:20.
What Does Matthew 5:20 Mean?
The Pharisees were great at following rules on the outside – doing the right actions where everyone could see. But Jesus was after something deeper: a heart that is genuinely transformed, not just a person performing good behavior. Real righteousness isn’t about looking good in front of others; it’s about loving God and people from the inside out. Jesus wasn’t raising the bar on rule-following – He was saying the rules were never the real point at all!
Hero Challenge
This week, when you do something kind or good, check your heart. Are you doing it because you genuinely care, or because you want to be noticed? Try doing one good thing today where absolutely no one knows it was you – just between you and God. That’s the kind of righteousness Jesus is talking about!
Did You Know?
Matthew 5:20 comes from the Sermon on the Mount – one of the longest and most famous teachings Jesus ever gave. He delivered it on a hillside overlooking the Sea of Galilee, teaching thousands of people. The Pharisees in the crowd must have been shocked to hear that their careful rule-keeping wasn’t enough – Jesus was calling for a whole new kind of life!
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
God can see your heart, not just what you do on the outside! What is something kind you can do today because you truly want to – not just because someone is watching?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
The Pharisees followed lots of rules, but Jesus said that wasn’t enough. Why do you think God cares more about your heart than about just doing all the right things?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
What is the difference between following rules to look good in front of others and living with a truly transformed heart? How can you tell which one you’re doing – and how do you grow in genuine, inside-out righteousness?
♥ Mission Prayer
Father God, I don't want to just look good on the outside — I want a heart that truly loves You and loves others. Search my heart and help me to grow in real, genuine righteousness. Transform me from the inside out.
