In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Matthew 5:16

Mission Briefing

Shine Your Light for God!

Jesus says you are a light – like a lamp in a dark room. And lights aren’t made to be hidden! They’re made to shine, to help people see, and to point to something greater. When you live for God, your life becomes a light that points others to Him! This mission explores Matthew 5:16.

What Does Matthew 5:16 Mean?

Jesus spoke these words as part of the Sermon on the Mount. He said believers are “the light of the world” – and this verse tells us what to do with that light: let it shine! Your good works – your kindness, your honesty, your love, your faithfulness – are like rays of light. When others see them, the goal isn’t for them to think you’re amazing. The goal is for them to look up and praise God who lives in you. Your life is meant to make people look at God!

Hero Challenge

Do one kind, noticeable good deed this week – something others will actually see. It could be helping a neighbor, standing up for someone, serving your family without being asked, or giving something away. Then pray: “God, I did this for Your glory. Let people see You in me.” Being a light is a daily, intentional choice!

Did You Know?

Right before this verse, Jesus talked about putting a lamp on a stand instead of hiding it under a bowl. In Bible times, lamps were precious – people used them carefully to light their whole house. Jesus says you are that precious light. He didn’t make you to hide. He made you to illuminate – to make the space around you brighter because of who He is in you!

Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question

What happens when you turn on a light in a dark room? You are like a light for God! What is one kind thing you can do today to shine?

Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question

Jesus says our good works should make people praise God – not just praise us. What’s the difference? Why does it matter?

Ages 10-13: Champion Question

Sometimes shining your light can feel uncomfortable – like standing out or going against the crowd. When have you felt that tension? What helped you keep shining anyway?

♥ Mission Prayer

Lord, help me to shine Your light in every room I walk into. Let my kindness, my honesty, and my love point people toward You — not toward me. I want my life to make people look up and praise You. Use me as Your light today. Amen.
