Mission Briefing
When You Help Others, You Help Jesus
What if every act of kindness you did for someone in need was actually done for Jesus Himself? That’s the incredible truth Jesus teaches in this amazing passage – and it changes everything about how we see people! This mission explores Matthew 25:35-36.
What Does Matthew 25:35-36 Mean?
In this story, Jesus describes what it will be like at the end of time when He separates those who truly followed Him from those who didn’t. The surprising thing is that the people who served others didn’t even realize they were serving Jesus! That’s because Jesus identifies so closely with people who are struggling – the hungry, the thirsty, the sick, the lonely stranger – that when you show love to them, you are showing love directly to Him. Every person matters that much to God.
Hero Challenge
Look for at least one “hidden Jesus” opportunity this week – someone who is hungry, lonely, sick, left out, or in need. It could be as simple as sharing your lunch, sitting with the new kid, or visiting a grandparent who hasn’t had company in a while. Do it with love, knowing you are serving the King!
Did You Know?
Matthew 25 contains some of the most well-known teachings of Jesus about the final judgment. Throughout history, faith communities inspired by this passage have built hospitals, orphanages, food banks, and shelters for the homeless. Many of the world’s greatest charitable organizations were started by people who took these words of Jesus seriously and simply began helping one person at a time.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
Jesus says when we help someone who is hungry or lonely, we are helping Him! Can you think of one way to help someone today?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
Why do you think Jesus cares so much about people who are sick, hungry, or strangers? How does knowing that change the way you look at people in need?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
Jesus says the faithful didn’t even realize they were serving Him when they helped others. What does this teach us about the attitude we should have when we serve people – should we expect recognition? Why or why not?
♥ Mission Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me to see You in every person who is hurting, lonely, or in need. Give me a generous heart and willing hands to serve others the way I would serve You. Thank You for teaching me that every act of kindness matters to You. Amen.
