Mission Briefing
The King on His Glorious Throne
Imagine the most powerful king who ever lived, surrounded by angels too bright to look at, sitting on a throne that fills the whole horizon. Jesus describes exactly this moment – and every single person who has ever lived will be gathered before Him! This mission explores Matthew 25:31-32.
What Does Matthew 25:31-32 Mean?
Jesus is describing the final judgment at the end of time – the moment when He returns in full glory as King of all creation. Every nation, every person who has ever lived, will be gathered before Him. He separates them like a shepherd sorting sheep from goats, which was a very familiar image to people in Bible times since shepherds often had mixed flocks. This separation isn’t random – it’s based on how people truly lived and treated others. The choices we make every day matter for eternity.
Hero Challenge
Since Jesus will one day judge how we lived, it matters how we act every single day – even when no one is watching! This week, do one kind or righteous thing privately, with no audience and no recognition. Remember that the King sees everything, and He is pleased by a heart that does good without needing applause.
Did You Know?
The image of Jesus as both shepherd and king is woven throughout the Bible. In the ancient Middle East, kings were often described as shepherds of their people – someone responsible for protecting and leading those in their care. When Jesus calls Himself the Good Shepherd and also describes Himself as King on a glorious throne, He is combining two of the most powerful leadership images from the entire Bible. He is the shepherd-king who knows every sheep by name.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
Jesus is described as a great King who loves His people like a shepherd loves his sheep! How do you think a good shepherd takes care of his sheep?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
Jesus will one day gather all people before His throne. How does knowing that Jesus sees everything you do – even in secret – affect the choices you make?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
The separation Jesus describes in this passage is based on how people actually lived, not just what they claimed to believe. What does this tell you about the relationship between faith and action? How does this shape your priorities for your everyday life?
