Matthew 25:14-30

22 October 2025 · Hero Mission
For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property... to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability.

Mission Briefing

The Parable of the Talents: Use What You’ve Been Given

Imagine your dad handed you some money before a long trip and said, “Do something good with this while I’m gone.” Would you bury it in the backyard to keep it safe – or would you put it to work? Jesus told a famous story about exactly this choice, and the ending is surprising! This mission explores Matthew 25:14-30.

What Does Matthew 25:14-30 Mean?

In Matthew 25:14-30, Jesus tells the Parable of the Talents. A master gives five talents to one servant, two to another, and one to a third – “each according to his ability.” The first two servants invest their talents and double them. The third buries his in the ground out of fear. When the master returns, he praises the faithful servants – “Well done, good and faithful servant!” – and gives them even more responsibility. But the servant who buried his talent out of fear loses even what he was given. The lesson is powerful: God gives each of us unique gifts and abilities, and He expects us to put them to work, not hide them. A talent unused is a trust broken.

Hero Challenge

Think of one gift, skill, or ability you have that you’ve been playing it safe with – maybe you’re afraid to try, afraid to fail, or just haven’t thought about how to use it for others. This week, take one step to USE that gift. Sing for someone. Help with your skill. Try out for something. Start the project you’ve been putting off. Don’t bury what God gave you – put it to work!

Did You Know?

In Jesus’s time, a “talent” was a massive unit of money – one talent was worth roughly 20 years of wages for a common worker. This wasn’t pocket change; it was an extraordinary trust. Jesus used such a large amount on purpose to show how significant the gifts God entrusts to us really are. What He places in our hands is far more valuable than we often think – and that makes faithful stewardship all the more important.

Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question

If someone gave you a beautiful garden to take care of, would you water it or just leave it? How is taking care of your gifts like tending a garden?

Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question

The servant who buried his talent was afraid. Have you ever been afraid to use a gift or try something because you might fail? What do you think would have happened if you had tried anyway?

Ages 10-13: Champion Question

The master gave different amounts to each servant “according to his ability” – not equally, but appropriately. Why do you think God gives different gifts to different people? How does comparing our gifts to others work against faithful stewardship?

♥ Mission Prayer

Lord, thank You for the gifts and abilities You've placed in me. Help me not to bury them out of fear or laziness. Give me the courage to invest what You've given me, trusting that even small, faithful steps are pleasing to You. I want to hear "Well done" one day.
