Mission Briefing
The Greatness Flip
What if everything the world says about being great is backwards? Jesus says the truly great ones are the humble servants – and that changes everything about how we should live! This mission explores Matthew 23:11-12.
What Does Matthew 23:11-12 Mean?
Jesus is speaking to crowds who had been watching religious leaders act proud and important. He flips the whole idea of greatness: if you push yourself up and act like you’re better than everyone, life will eventually bring you low. But if you humbly serve others without demanding attention, God will lift you up. This is one of the most repeated principles in all of Jesus’ teaching!
Hero Challenge
Pick one moment this week when you feel the urge to brag or show off – and instead, say something that lifts someone else up. Celebrate their win instead of your own. Watch what happens to the atmosphere in the room when you do!
Did You Know?
Jesus said some version of this truth multiple times in the Gospels – it shows up in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and even in the letter of James. It was clearly one of the most important lessons Jesus wanted His followers to really get. When something is repeated that many times in the Bible, that’s God saying “pay close attention!”
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
Is it better to talk about how great you are, or to quietly help someone? What do you think Jesus would say?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
Jesus says the greatest person is the one who serves. Who is the greatest person you know, and do they serve others? What makes them great to you?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
“Whoever exalts himself will be humbled.” Can you think of examples from history or real life where this came true? What does it look like to truly humble yourself in today’s world?
♥ Mission Prayer
Jesus, You were the greatest of all and yet You came to serve. Help me stop trying to prove how great I am and start looking for ways to lift others up instead. Shape my heart to look like Yours. Amen.
