Generosity

Mark 12:41-44

27 November 2025 · Hero Mission
And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples to him and said to them, "Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on."
Mark 12:41-44

Mission Briefing

The Widow Who Gave Everything

Imagine standing in a crowd watching people drop huge bags of money into an offering box – coins clanging, everyone impressed. Then a poor widow shuffles up and drops in two tiny coins worth almost nothing. Who do you think gave more? Jesus was watching, and His answer surprised everyone. This is one of the most powerful stories about generosity in the entire Bible!

What Does This Mean?

Jesus was sitting in the temple, watching people give offerings. Rich people gave large amounts – impressive by any measure. But when a poor widow dropped in two tiny copper coins worth less than a penny, Jesus called His disciples over and said she had given more than everyone else. Why? Because the rich gave from what they had left over, but she gave everything she had to live on. Jesus doesn’t measure generosity by the amount – He measures it by the sacrifice. A little given from a heart full of trust is worth more than a lot given with plenty left over.

Hero Challenge

Generosity isn’t always about money – it can be time, effort, or care. This week, give something that actually costs you something: give up your free time to help someone, share your favorite snack instead of saving it for yourself, or put extra effort into encouraging a friend. Measure your giving by the sacrifice, not just the size!

Did You Know?

The two copper coins the widow gave were called “lepta” in Greek – the smallest currency in circulation in Israel at the time. Two lepta equaled one quadrans, which was worth about a quarter of a cent in Roman money. It was genuinely the smallest amount a person could give – and yet Jesus said it was worth more than all the large donations combined. God’s economy works very differently from ours!

Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question

Jesus said the widow gave MORE than the rich people, even though she only gave two tiny coins. Why do you think that was?

Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question

The rich people gave out of their extra money, but the widow gave everything she had. What does it mean to give sacrificially? Can you think of something that would be a sacrifice for you to give?

Ages 10-13: Champion Question

Jesus used this moment to teach His disciples about what real giving looks like. How does this story challenge the way we often measure generosity – by how much someone gives rather than what it cost them? What does it say about the widow’s trust in God?

♥ Mission Prayer

Lord, help me to give like the widow — from a heart that trusts You completely, not just from what I have left over. Teach me that true generosity is measured by love and sacrifice, not by amount. Amen.
