Mission Briefing

The Servant King

In every kingdom story, the king sits on the throne and people serve him. But Jesus flipped the whole script. The King of Kings came – not for a throne – but for a towel, a road, a cross. And He says the same spirit should live in us! This mission explores Mark 10:45.

What Does Mark 10:45 Mean?

Jesus said He came not to be served but to serve. The Son of God – the one who made the universe – came as a servant. And then He went even further: He gave His life as a ransom. A ransom is the price paid to free someone who is captured. We were captured by sin, and Jesus paid the price to set us free. This one verse tells us both HOW Jesus lived (as a servant) and WHY He died (to ransom us).

Hero Challenge

This week, do a “servant audit.” Each evening, ask yourself: did I look for chances to serve others today, or did I mostly look for ways to be comfortable, first, or in charge? Write down one moment each day when you chose to serve. By the end of the week, you’ll have a list of real hero moments to celebrate!

Did You Know?

Jesus said this in response to two of His disciples – James and John – asking for the best seats in His kingdom (the seats of power and honor). Instead of getting upset, Jesus used it as a teaching moment. He told ALL twelve disciples that greatness in God’s kingdom works upside-down from the world: the greatest is the servant of all. That standard applies to us too!

Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question

Jesus came to help others, not to be the boss and boss everyone around. What’s one way you can help someone at home or school today?

Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question

Jesus said He came to give His life as a “ransom.” What does a ransom do? Why was it necessary for Jesus to pay one for us?

Ages 10-13: Champion Question

The disciples were arguing about who would be greatest. Jesus answered by pointing to Himself as a servant. How does making service – not power – the measure of greatness change what you want to be known for?

♥ Mission Prayer

Jesus, You came not to be served but to serve — and You gave everything for us. Help me to have that same spirit and to look for ways to serve others before myself every day. Amen.
