How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?
John 5:44

Mission Briefing

Whose Approval Do You Want?

Have you ever done something – or NOT done something – just because of what your friends might think? Jesus asks a powerful question in this verse that gets right to the heart of that struggle. This mission explores John 5:44.

What Does John 5:44 Mean?

Jesus is talking to religious leaders who knew the scriptures really well, but they had a big problem: they cared more about impressing each other than pleasing God. They were so focused on what people thought of them that they couldn’t truly believe. Jesus says that the only opinion that really matters is God’s. When we chase people’s approval above everything else, we lose sight of what’s truly real and important.

Hero Challenge

This week, when you face a choice about what to do or say, ask yourself this question first: “Would God be pleased with this?” Practice making at least one decision based on what God thinks rather than what friends or others might say about you. It might feel scary – but that’s where faith grows!

Did You Know?

The Pharisees Jesus was addressing had memorized huge sections of the Bible and were considered the most religious people around. Yet Jesus said their love for human praise was blocking them from truly believing. It’s a reminder that knowing the right words isn’t enough – our heart has to be pointed toward God.

Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question

Who do you want to make happy most – God or your friends? Why?

Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question

Can you think of a time when you changed what you did because of what someone else might think? What would it have looked like to choose God’s approval instead?

Ages 10-13: Champion Question

Jesus says chasing people’s approval can actually get in the way of believing in God. How does peer pressure connect to faith? What’s one area of your life where you need to care less about what people think and more about what God thinks?

♥ Mission Prayer

Lord, it's so easy to care about what people think of me. Help me to want Your approval more than anyone else's. Give me the courage to live for You, even when it's not popular. Amen.
