Mission Briefing
Light That Cannot Be Stopped
Have you ever walked into a dark room and turned on a flashlight? Even the tiniest light pushes the darkness away – darkness can never win against light. That is exactly what this verse is telling us about Jesus! This mission explores John 1:5.
What Does John 1:5 Mean?
The Bible calls Jesus the Light of the world. In this verse, “darkness” means everything that is scary, wrong, or broken in our world – sadness, fear, sin, and evil. But God’s light – Jesus – shines right through all of that, and nothing can put it out. No matter how dark things seem, the Light is still winning.
Hero Challenge
Think of something in your life or your world that feels dark or scary right now. Write it down or draw a picture of it, then draw a big bright light shining on it. Pray and ask Jesus, the Light, to shine into that situation this week.
Did You Know?
John wrote this verse at the very beginning of his Gospel – before he told any stories about Jesus – because he wanted readers to understand right away who Jesus is. The word “overcome” in Greek also means “to seize” or “to comprehend” – the darkness cannot grab hold of the light or understand it. Jesus is simply too bright!
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
What happens to a dark room when you turn on a light? How is Jesus like that light?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
If Jesus is the Light and He lives in you, how can you be a light to your friends or classmates this week?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
Sometimes it can feel like darkness is winning in the world. How does knowing that Jesus’s light has never been – and can never be – overcome change the way you face hard times?
♥ Mission Prayer
Jesus, thank You for being the Light that no darkness can ever put out. When I feel afraid or when things seem dark, remind me that Your light is always shining. Help me to carry Your light wherever I go. Amen.
