Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
James 5:16

Mission Briefing

Prayer Is Powerful – Really Powerful!

Have you ever felt like your prayers were too small or not important enough? James says that the prayers of ordinary, faithful people have GREAT power. That includes your prayers! This mission explores James 5:16.

What Does James 5:16 Mean?

James is telling the early church something radical: be open and honest with each other about struggles and sins, and pray for one another. When we bring our real struggles into the open and lift each other up to God, healing can happen – in our hearts, our relationships, and even our bodies. And he wants us to know: prayer is not a weak last resort. It is one of the most powerful things we can do.

Hero Challenge

Find one trusted person this week – a parent, a friend, or a mentor – and share something you have been struggling with. Then pray for each other. Practice what James is describing, and watch what God does when two people bring their real lives to Him together.

Did You Know?

Right after this verse, James gives the example of Elijah – a powerful Old Testament prophet – as proof that prayer works. But then James makes a surprising point: Elijah was a person “with a nature like ours.” In other words, he was ordinary. He got scared and had doubts, just like us. And yet his prayers moved heaven and earth!

Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question

Do you know someone who needs prayer today? Let us say a prayer for them right now together!

Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question

James says prayer has great power “as it is working.” What do you think that means? Is prayer something that happens all at once, or something that keeps working over time?

Ages 10-13: Champion Question

James connects confessing our struggles to healing. Why do you think being honest with a trusted person – not just praying privately – is part of how God brings healing? What makes that kind of vulnerability hard?

♥ Mission Prayer

Lord, thank You that my prayers matter to You. Help me not to keep my struggles hidden but to be honest with trusted people and to pray with them. Remind me that prayer is powerful — and that You hear every word. Amen.
