Mission Briefing
A Great Light in the Darkness
Have you ever been in a really dark room and someone turned on a light? Everything changes in an instant! Isaiah wrote these words hundreds of years before Jesus was born, predicting one of the most amazing events in history – the arrival of the Light of the World! This mission explores Isaiah 9:2.
What Does Isaiah 9:2 Mean?
The prophet Isaiah wrote this message to a people living in very dark and difficult times – they were surrounded by enemies and felt hopeless. But Isaiah promised that a great light was coming. Christians have always understood this as a prophecy about Jesus, who called Himself “the light of the world.” Wherever Jesus goes, darkness is pushed away. And because we follow Him, we carry His light with us everywhere we go!
Hero Challenge
You can be a light-bringer this week! Find one person around you who seems sad, lonely, or going through a hard time. Bring some light into their day – through a kind word, a smile, a card, or simply spending time with them. Light spreads when you share it!
Did You Know?
Isaiah wrote this prophecy around 700 years before Jesus was born! It’s one of the clearest predictions about the coming Messiah in the entire Old Testament. Matthew quotes this exact verse in chapter 4 of his Gospel when describing the beginning of Jesus’s ministry in Galilee. That’s over 700 years of promised light – finally arriving!
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
When the lights come on in a dark room, what happens to the darkness? How is Jesus like a light that makes darkness go away?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
Isaiah wrote this prophecy 700 years before Jesus came. What does it tell you about God that He planned Jesus’s coming so far in advance?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
Jesus said “you are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14) to His followers. If you carry Jesus’s light, what responsibility does that give you? Where in your world does the most darkness exist – and how can you bring light there?
♥ Mission Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for being the Light who came into our darkness. Help me to carry Your light into every room and every relationship I'm part of. Shine through me! Amen.
