Mission Briefing
New Life from an Old Stump
Have you ever seen a tree stump and wondered if anything could ever grow there again? Isaiah had an amazing vision: something mighty would grow from what looked completely finished – and it would change the whole world! This mission explores Isaiah 11:1.
What Does Isaiah 11:1 Mean?
Jesse was the father of King David, and God had promised that the greatest King would come from David’s family line. But by Isaiah’s time, that royal family seemed finished – like a chopped-down tree with nothing left but a stump. Isaiah said: do not give up on that stump. A brand new shoot – a new branch – would grow from it and bear amazing fruit. That branch was Jesus, born hundreds of years later into David’s family line, exactly as God promised.
Hero Challenge
Think of something in your life or someone you know that seems “like a stump” – something that feels dead or hopeless. Pray for it this week, believing that God can make new life grow from the most impossible places. Nothing is too dried up for God to restore.
Did You Know?
When a tree is cut down, sometimes a new shoot actually grows from the roots – and it can eventually grow into a healthy tree again. Isaiah used this real-life picture to give people hope. Scientists call this regrowth a “coppice shoot.” God used what looks like an ending to set up the most incredible beginning in history.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
Have you ever seen something grow from a place where you did not expect it, like a flower in a crack in the sidewalk? God loves to make things grow in surprising places!
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
God kept His promise about the “branch” for hundreds and hundreds of years. How does that help you trust that He will keep His promises to you too?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
Isaiah’s prophecy came in a moment when God’s people felt like the story was over. How can you hold onto hope and trust God’s bigger plan during seasons of your life that feel like a dead-end stump?
♥ Mission Prayer
God, You are the God of new beginnings! Thank You that even what looks dead and finished is not too hard for You. Help me to trust that You are growing something beautiful even in the places that look like old stumps. I believe You keep every promise. Amen.
