Mission Briefing
Learn to Do Good
Doing good isn’t something that just happens automatically – Isaiah says we have to learn it! And the kind of good God has in mind is big and bold: seeking justice, helping the oppressed, and caring for those who have no one. This mission explores Isaiah 1:17.
What Does Isaiah 1:17 Mean?
God spoke these words through Isaiah to call His people to action. He specifically names some of the most vulnerable people in ancient society: the fatherless (orphans with no protection) and widows (women who had lost their husbands and were often left with nothing). He says: don’t just feel sorry for them – actually do something. Seek justice, correct oppression, and plead their cause. Real goodness isn’t passive – it gets up and does something about what’s wrong.
Hero Challenge
“Learn to do good” means goodness is a skill you practice. This week, pick one specific act of justice or kindness aimed at someone who is struggling – donate to a food bank, write a letter of encouragement to someone going through a hard time, or volunteer alongside a parent. Doing good takes practice – so practice it!
Did You Know?
In ancient Israel, orphans and widows were among the most legally unprotected groups in society. They had no one to stand up for their rights in court or to defend their land and property. That’s why God repeatedly singles them out in the Bible – He wanted His people to be their protectors. Over 40 verses in the Bible specifically mention caring for widows and orphans!
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
God wants us to help people who are sad or don’t have enough. Can you think of one person you could be kind to this week?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
Isaiah says to “correct oppression.” What does oppression mean? Why do you think God would tell us to correct it – not just notice it?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
God tells His people to “plead the widow’s cause” – to become someone’s advocate. Who are the modern equivalents of widows and orphans in our world today? How can a young person like you begin to advocate for them in real, practical ways?
♥ Mission Prayer
God, help me learn to do good — not just think about it. Show me who needs someone in their corner today, and give me the courage and creativity to actually help them. Make me someone who seeks justice and takes action for others. Amen.
